What are Community-Based Training and Employment Services?
Community-based training and employment (CBTE) services are projects facilitated by and for communities, designed to enable individuals with the right tools to find and sustain employment. CBTE services are not for-profit and structurally flexible to provide the best learning experience and allow for the needs of clients.
CBTE is more familiar than you might think. From community centres to immigrant service agencies, CBTE agencies provide services such as:
- Career assessment and program placement - to help people discover and prepare for the employment that interests them
- Language Training - including literacy, numeracy, and ESL
- Sector-Specific Employment Preparation - preparing job-seekers for their particular vocation, such as healthcare or engineering
- Post-graduate Employment Programs - to help former students transfer their education to the labour market setting
- Employment Resource and Preparation Services - to help clients access and finalize job opportunities
ONESTEP is a province-wide umbrella group made up of not-for-profit agencies that delivery Community-Based Training and Employment Services (CBTE).
Why is Community-Based Training and Employment Important?
Everyone has the right to learn, develop their own skills and find meaningful employment within their communities - nobody should be excluded from the many opportunities that education and training afford. ONESTEP's member agencies provide over 450 programs and serve over 250,000 clients each year - and with a success rate of over 70%, CBTE does its part to realize this ideal.
Institutional learning is often inaccessible or simply inapplicable to community needs. What community-based training and employment services provide is a comfortable and inclusive form of training that helps clients prepare for and find work at every step of the way. Community-based training and employment services are obstacle-free: they are cost-effective (in most cases free of charge), and sensitive to the needs of clients.
Moreover, CBTE agencies are not-for-profit - they put any additional revenue back into program development and enhancement. Our bottom line is meeting needs of clients, often those who face the most barriers to employment; our focus is on quality of service rather than profit.
For this reason, not-for-profit agencies network with others to build strong, sustainable communities. Our agencies share resources and make referrals depending on the needs of their clients. Our clients are our top priority; they are not a means to an end. ONESTEP links organizations throughout the province in order to create a wider net for them.
