Trying to Find a Job?

Resume Writing and Career Skills Links

There are hundreds of websites that provide tips on resume writing and other job search skills. Here is a sample to get you started:

35 Ways to Land a Job Online
Aimed at mostly tech/computer-related jobs, but much of the advice carries over into other fields. Lots of links to other helpful sites, although many are very US-centric.
U.S.-based, English

Job Futures
An HRDC site that covers career and occupational outlooks in Canada. Very extensive site; excellent for researching occupations, although it sometimes leaves out newer kinds of jobs.
English | French

JobStar Resumes and Cover Letters
An extremely well-presented and useful California site. It is fairly graphical, but the same graphics are repeated on most of the pages, so it does load quite quickly. Lots of concrete advice about resumes, cover letters, and so on, with examples and (for some) templates you can use; book recommendations.
California-based, English

Kaplan Career Centre
From the same people who run programs for standardized exams. Lots of advice and articles on career planning, job searches, and more; includes an interactive practice interview. Friendly, fairly informal tone.
English

MazeMaster's Job Search Techniques
Cover letters, resumes, interviews, cold calling, application forms, and more. There's an interactive interview and opportunities to create your own resume and cover letter(s).
English | French

Motiv8
Career development webzine for youth with tons of articles and links.
B.C.-based, English

McMaster University's Career Services
Website for engineering students contains a huge list of "functional skills" terms that can be used in your resume to describe your past work experience and personal qualities.
English

Prepare for a Job Interview
Some tips for rather high-end-sounding jobs.
English

The Riley Guide
A web classic—contains hundreds of links to other sites with job-search tips, resume advice, and sector growth forecasts. Most information is specific to the U.S. but useful nonetheless.
U.S.-based, English

University of Waterloo's Online Career Manual
Has a career manual format; lots of exercises you can do online, and clear advice to follow. This site does require quite a high literacy level.
English

WorkSearch
An HRDC site, includes exercises on self-knowledge, job-search techniques, career exploration, and marketing skills.
English | French
