Financial Vibrancy: Learning from the CBT sector
and building capacity from within
There is more to financial vibrancy
than money. Financial vibrancy results from the synergistic linking of
multiple organizational capacities (or paths). The paths we will explore in this
initiative include: governance, leadership and strategic planning,
entrepreneurship, financial management, human resource management, results-
monitoring, public relations and communications, technology, and
research-utilization. ONESTEP, in collaboration with OAYEC
and ACTEW, and our advisory team of leaders from CBT agencies, will assemble
existing research, best practices, available training opportunities, and
indicators for financial vibrancy. We will then bring together CBT
practitioners, experts, and leaders to discuss specific and proven strategies
for becoming financially vibrant and develop action plans for the CBT sector.
To facilitate the lessons-learning
process, we will engage the sector in a series of discussions, both web-based
and in-person, and build resources and tools to build capacity from
within. Step
One: Sharing Lessons Learned (July
2006) Please stay tuned for The
Lessons-Learned Sharing Guide that we are sending out to CBT agencies across the
province July
10th. Watch
your Inbox in mid-July and please take some time to reflect on and share your
experiences using either the web-based forum or email
template. Step
Two: Gathering of the Minds
(September 2006). ONESTEP is hosting a Think Tank
Forum in Toronto with representatives from successful CBT agencies from across
the province to delve into greater detail about the different paths to financial
vibrancy. Step
Three: Synthesizing lessons-learned
(Fall 2006).
Following the information gathering
stages, we will synthesize the collective ideas into a compendium of
lessons-learned and resources available to the sector. Step
Four: Web-based Tool (Spring 2007). Based on the lessons learned, we
will then build an innovative web-based tool to help agencies gauge their
progress toward financial vibrancy. Stay
tuned for regular updates on this exciting project.

The Impact of Welfare State Restructuring on The
Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector in Canada and the US
Building on a previous study in the state of Delaware and a review of
research done in other locations in the US, I recently investigated the impact
of welfare state restructuring on the nonprofit social services sector in two
provinces in Canada, British Columbia and Ontario. Research in the US has shown
that welfare state restructuring has produced unforeseen (and largely negative)
consequences for nonprofit sector capacity and inter-organizational
relationships. Welfare reform has increased the demand for services from the US
nonprofit social services sector.

The Non-Profit Sector in a Place-based Policy World
The value of the non-profit sector has never been clearer. In addition to its
age-old role of providing social goods and services that the market and public
sectors have failed to deliver adequately, the sector is a key player in the new
social policy era. So argues David Hay, Director of CPRN’s Family Network. Hay
says that despite the challenges inherent in funding regimes, reporting
requirements and regulations, the sector is still a major source of social
innovation. Its committed workforce, experience, knowledge, flexibility and
creativity, its entrepreneurial capacity and its holistic approach are its
strengths. Hay suggests that non-profits are well placed to play an increasingly
important part in place-based policies of the future.
