Online Resources

The Resource Library is an online searchable database of information about community-based employment and training across Ontario and beyond. Visit the ONESTEP Resource Library: www.onestep.on.ca/resource/intro.cfm Below are some recent additions:

Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act

The Federal government's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act will be fully enacted in January 2004. This is a guide prepared for the non-proft sector. Please see the links for further information.

To assist you, in advising, or working within your organization, in meeting the challenge of the above, please see a new Privacy Tool-kit, available at http://www.ccp.ca/public_affairs/pdf/Privacy_101_A_Guide_to_Privacy_Legislation.pdf

Clearly written with non-profit organizations, and their consultants in mind, the rules will apply to all “commercial activity”, and are therefore highly relevant to co-operatives and businesses as well.

The PIPEDA law has been in force for organizations within federal jurisdiction since January 1, 2001, and there is considerable experience with it. See, for instance, the Federal Privacy Commissioner’s Findings, at http://www.privcom.gc.ca/cf-dc/2003/index2-3_e.asp

Interesting Ideas and Good Practices at Immigrant-Serving Agencies

ISAP Program Review

RealWorld Systems sought examples of successful approaches for meeting the needs of clients and organizations in the settlement sector at various stages of the ISAP program review. Different stakeholders in the process commented on excellence in programs, services, and agencies. These included successful services and interesting programming, innovative policies, and good practice.

These ideas provide a perspective on potential improved practices for the settlement sector. Since most of them have not been examined critically or evaluated for effectiveness, we cannot call them ‘best practices’ at this point. Further research is required to understand how and whether broader implementation and sharing is valid.
